Samoan Airlines Cancels Flight over drug and alcohol test result
Aviation safety is under scrutiny after Samoa Airways revealed that several staff tested positive for drugs, including a pilot on a prescription sleeping pill. The airline said recent drug testing, showed 10 percent of the tested staff returned positive results for illegal and prescriptive substances, as well as alcohol.
This incident serves as a wake-up call, highlighting the need for consistent drug and alcohol testing in the sector, and a zero-tolerance approach towards substance abuse. As the aviation industry continues to recover post-pandemic, ensuring passenger safety must remain the top priority for airlines and airport authorities alike. Samoa Airways rolled out its drug and alcohol testing policy for all staff in October 2024.
